What PADI Tec 40 actually involves
The gateway to the PADI TecRec ladder. Tec 40 takes you from recreational no-stop diving into the technical world: limited decompression to 40 metres, a single deco gas (EAN50), and the twinset skills, gas planning and team procedures every tech diver needs. Four training dives over three days with a dedicated technical instructor, small ratios and all gear and gas included.
Your schedule
- 1 Day 1
Theory + confined skills
Gas planning, decompression theory, equipment configuration and the DSAT/Buhlmann approach to limited deco. Confined-water session building twinset trim, valve drills, gas switches and S-drills.
- Twinset configuration
- Valve & S-drills
- Gas planning
- 2 Day 2
Training dives 1 & 2
Two open-water dives applying team procedures, gas matching, and switching to a single deco gas at a controlled stop. Focus on trim, buoyancy and situational awareness in doubles.
- First deco stop
- EAN50 gas switch
- Team formation
- 3 Day 3
Training dives 3 & 4 — to 40 m
The full Tec 40 experience: limited decompression dives to 40 m with a single deco gas, complete gas-planning cycle, and simulated problem management. Demonstrate the skills to earn the certification.
- 40 m limited deco
- Problem management
- Certification dive

FAQ
Is Tec 40 the right place to start technical diving?
Yes. Tec 40 is designed as the bridge from recreational to technical diving. It introduces staged decompression, twinsets and a single deco gas in a controlled, limited way — the perfect first step before Tec 45 and 50.
Do I need my own technical equipment?
No. A complete twinset, backplate, wing, regulators and deco cylinder are included. If you own a technical rig you're welcome to dive it once we've checked the configuration.
How is this different from the Deep Diver specialty?
Deep Diver stays within no-stop (recreational) limits to 40 m. Tec 40 crosses into planned decompression — you'll incur and manage a deco obligation using a separate deco gas, in a redundant twinset.
